The hits keep coming, and the hack I use to clean up vomit.

I promise this will be the last time I write about misfortune in January.

My son, who was so sick on Wednesday night, eventually fell asleep around 4am after hours of wretching. We stayed home on Thursday, and he was running circles around me, eating whatever he desired and keeping it way, way down. On Friday, he went to school. On Saturday, we decided to keep plans for a play date with his BFF. He had been so excited all week for this play date, and on Friday I even let his friend's mom know that he hadn't been well. I put it in her hands if she'd still like us to come over, and she said sure. Because he was fine, right?

So we arrive at the play date this morning. We cross the threshold of the home and the family greets all of us. And my son says good morning so politely and then...coughs. A few more coughs come out and I realize, he is gagging. And then he vomits everywhere.

I was taking on what I assumed would be my son's embarrassment: my face flushed and I held my hands over my mouth. My son, in fact not embarrassed, stood around like it was no big deal (it really wasn't; no one made him feel bad - are these friends of ours beautiful people or what?). He was sad when we left, and I was amazed that yet again, for the fifth isolated time in January 2019, one of my two children had vomited.

I am the designated vomit cleaner in my partnership. My husband will not clean it up (unless it's in a car and he rules at that, so...). After I got norovirus when I was seven months pregnant with my daughter, I decided that I needed to get smarter about cleaning vomit if I was ever going to survive the preschool/daycare years. I am ridiculous about cleaning it now!  I always come back to the CDC:
When you are sick with norovirus, you can shed billions of virus particles in your vomit and poop. It only takes a few of these particles to make someone sick. (source)
Yes, the CDC said poop. Just like that. Poop.

I approach cleaning this stuff up like I can SEE these particles. After a vomit, I strip my children and quarantine any linens or clothing they might have puked on. This stuff goes outside the house, and when I can hose it off I will, even if it means the following day. If, after a vomit, they wipe their mouth on a towel hanging in the bathroom -- poof, it goes too. I bleach everything they touch and even things they haven't touched. I take all trash outside immediately. I don't want those particles hanging around! Toothbrushes go bye-bye. If they take a drink, I make sure the cup is soaped up and cleaned up ASAP and then I bring in any disposable cups if I have some leftover from a party. Usually, I do. Then I tell my kids that it's OK to throw up on the floor, but I beg them to make their next pukes in the toilet. They always do. They are amazing. And then, for the next weeks upon weeks, because norovirus lives in the guts for up to a month, I beg them to wash their hands. I insist. Because after the vomiting is over, then there's the poop particles. Oh my, I don't have to tell you about those.

I know, I cannot see particles. But this hack has really helped me keep my hands out of my mouth and off my face until the threat is over and we can go back on living. I wash my hands so often during an "outbreak" that they crack and bleed. Friend, it is worth it. Since my pregnancy in 2013, I have not fallen to norovirus. And my kids have indeed "brought it home" at least once a year since.

And I tried to LAUGH today, but it was fake and I was ashamed of myself.

Really real life: when your word of the year retaliates

I mean.
January is casually flipping me a bird at every turn. This week alone, a shattered glass in the kitchen sent shrapnel in a thousand directions, including but not limited to the soles of my daughter's feet. She threw up (again!) on Monday morning and now, my son's turn. He began throwing up not long ago and while his bowels are empty, he has an unfortunate trait of dry heaving until he cannot physically bear to move. It is going to be a long night for him...he looked at me and quietly said "whyyyyyy".
I don't know, G.
I tried to laugh about it or, find the humor. But I find I've been more of a coach tonight. You're going to get through it. You can run to the toilet! Go, go, go, I am with you every step of the way! You got this. It sucks, but, you are being such a champ.
Meanwhile I am bleaching like a lunatic, washing hands until raw and staying home tomorrow to recover. I hope. One night, done night...and please park it here.

Suwanee River & SeaWorld: Lesson Two of 2018

We, the little family and I, did our second getaway of 2018! We went north to the Suwanee River. My husband and I have long wanted a cabin for a second home; a getaway; a piece of woods to retreat within and explore. We thought, after a long search, that this land and small cabin we found were absolutely just right, so we visited it on Saturday. It was nearly a five hour drive to get there (plus a speeding ticket, ouch) and when we saw the property our jaws dropped. It was everything we ever wanted, but it was so remote that it made my husband leery*. He was quiet on our drive out of there, and I knew he was upset. I offered to drive home, but we decided it was too far and we had promised a "hotel" night to the kids, thinking we'd be drawing up an offer on Sunday. Our kids LOVE hotels! We couldn't disappoint. Gainesville hotel rooms were largely booked so we kept on driving and decided while children slept in the car that we would head to Orlando. You can imagine their delight when we found a last minute suite for a great deal, and then we said we'd do SeaWorld the next day! They went full bananas -- we've deprived them of all things Orlando (except the great science museum there, ha!); remember, we want the not-too-remote cabin in the woods, folks!

Here you will see that old Suwanee River (could be your view if you like remote remote remote):

At SeaWorld, a Guy Harvey mural:

We had lunch with sharks, etc.

We saw penguins!

Sea turtles!

And flamingos!

And yes, there was even a coffee stop before the SeaWorld madness.

Even though it didn't turn out how we wanted on the Suwanee, by golly, we had a great time making our way to North Florida and pit-stopping in Central FL on our way home.

*Listen to your gut, your spidey senses, your tingling spines. We joked that in another universe today, on a cosmic loop, we bought the cabin and we were all murdered there the first weekend we stayed in it. Yes! We are one horror story away from Stephen King status.

Twenty Eighteen, oh hello!

Oh hello Twenty Eighteen! How are you doing!

I rang in the New Year with family in Montana (Yellowstone NP, Big Sky, Bozeman) and I'm still holding on to the last few days of January since it was a such wonderful month with family and fir trees on all sides of me. I mean, will you just look below? It was such a gift to be in the geology and ecology of Yellowstone on New Year's Day.

Suns up on 2018 though, and it's time to get busy with my resolution. I'm keeping it simple this year, and instead of a lengthy list, 2018 will be a year of learning for me. I'm looking forward to trying all manner of new things or getting better at old things. I'm going to be stuffing as much as I can through my learning filter*. I can't wait to tell you all the books I've already smashed into January! All the new things I've learned! Come with this reader, woman, mother and yes, still coffee drinker, and let's learn.

*What did I learn today? Never, ever, ever, ever send an email when you're cross. I wasn't on the giving or receiving end of an angry email, but I was reading some you-can't-take-that-back kind of communication unfold in real time as part of a larger group. Today was an amazing example of how poorly it looks to be involved in an email drama. No, I don't tend to send emails when I'm fired up. But I do tend to find people and their behaviors fascinating in general, especially when they believe they are justified in what they've dished out with furious finger pecks!

audiobooks

From USA Today: Celebrity readers help audiobooks grow.

They've certainly changed my recent life as a reader! I've been listening to them for a decade, but post-children they are a luxury to help me get through books faster. "That's cheating." What? Are you serious? Reading is reading.

With my library card I have access to thousands of free audiobooks that I download and stream in my car, via Bluetooth speakers as I fold the laundry, do the dishes, etc. It is for this reason that I don't use Audible, but I love the idea that by joining it sort of socializes the reading process and encourages you to listen to more books by earning badges, etc.

Some favorites:

To Kill A Mockingbird read by Sissy Spacek
Rebecca read by Anna Massey
Secret Life of Bees read by Jenna Lamia
The Goldfinch read by David Pittu
Bossypants read by Tina Fey
Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea read by Chelsea Handler

the good, the bad & the ugly

January 2016

 Blue nails.

 In the scrub with husband.

South Florida Fair.

February 2016

We were outside all month.

One Friday night, we took the local commuter train. We road it a bit and then stopped off for dinner, and turned around and road home. The kids loved the adventure!

By a park near our house. Because in February, we really were outside all month.

March 2016

Oh hey there selfie portrait.

Celebrated my alma mater's success in the basketball tourney! March Madness fever at work.

And the joys of Easter at the backyard hunt.

April 2017

the ugly:

Allow me to translate: Please don't scream at me Mom. Ouch. Noted. Also the chipped nail polish. Double ouch.

Behold that beauty.

And finally, Helen turned 3. April is her month. P.S. the 3s are hard with this one.

May 2016

George won a medal for reading 100 books; kindergarten is mostly a wrap at this point.

Mother's Day. A card from my mom that made me cry.

This book also made me cry. I loved those green nails.

June 2016

My girl.

This boy turned six.

And as we have done for the past two years, we spent his birthday in Gainesville at the Florida Museum of Natural History (what a wonderful place!).

July 2016

We hosted a small gathering for the Fourth.

There was a family reunion in Mt. Dora, FL. A fast and fab weekend.

During the third week of July, we flew out to my home town - Portland, OR. George is riding in the back of my grandpa's tractor.

And then we headed to the Oregon Coast.

And delighted in nights on the beach.

August 2016

Our trip spilled into August. And I'm not exaggerating when I say this trip was a much needed boost to my heart.

School started! AKA the first grade and pre-k. It marked Helen's departure from daycare.

September 2016

Labor Day in Sanibel (link here)

Read this beast of a book. So great.

October 2016

Hurricane Matthew threatened our county with a direct hit as a Category 4 storm. We buttoned up and then waited...only tropical storm force winds arrived - and for every last one of them, we were grateful.
As Hurricane Matthew interrupted the start to October, it also put Halloween and all things autumn in a holding pattern.

I roasted tons of veggies. ^^^Turnip for what?

Fennel!

Pepitas!

And finally, we arrived at Halloween. Frankenstein & Elsa were the costumes of 2016.

November 2016

After I wiped away tears and woke up to the reality that my country chose, I read this. Kindness overload.

The husband made apple pies for Thanksgiving!

The turkeys were turkeys.

December 2016

These kids have never been on Santa's lap. We're OK with it.

Our home all festive.

Oh yeah. We did the jammie thing!

Long Weekend: Labor Day

For Labor Day weekend we escaped to Sanibel, a family favorite place. It was One Hundred Percent.
Finished Hannah Pittard's Listen to Me.
Found a ton of uninhabited shells.
Kept my kids burn-free!
Plotting our next getaway. G keeps saying NEW YORK.
